Shaarei Tzedek Hospital Jerusalem, Israel

At four am, siren wailing along the silent dark streets of Jerusalem, we were rushing to the closest hospital.  My daughters cries had escalated to screeching and what I thought at first must be a fracture of some sort turned out to be septic hip, a rare occurance for a nine year old, and extremely painful.  After the first week spent sporadically arguing with the nurses that she really was screaming in pain and wasn't just a spoiled child, she started recovering.

I had my camera with me so you can have a glimpse of the kind clowns, eclectic patients in traditional garb and newborns with proud moms.

The hospital is an interesting place, a world of it's own that takes adjusting into and out of.

My daughter's favorite place was the children's school and mini zoo replete with therapists and volunteers.  The guinea pig gave birth to triplets, the chinchilla's sat contentedly on her lap and she created art projects.

If I had a wish for the hospital it would be better staffing for the doctors & nurses.  It seems they are chronically overworked from extremely demanding shifts with no breaks.  It's challenging to be empathic when you are sleep deprived and on overdrive.

In gratitude for the totally covered 3 week stay, including MRI, we donated some fresh playmobile to the children's department that seemed in need of some new toys.

The photos of soldiers are volunteers that came to sing for the patients.
